UK Trade Agreement
We help South African businesses unlock the benefits of the UK–South Africa trade arrangements
by guiding you through the rules of origin, documentation and customs processes needed to
qualify for preferential tariffs when trading with the United Kingdom.
What is the UK Trade Agreement?
The UK–South Africa trade arrangements are designed to preserve and enhance preferential market access between
South Africa and the United Kingdom. They aim to reduce tariffs and other barriers to trade on qualifying goods, provided
that they meet the relevant rules of origin and customs requirements.
The UK–SACUM Economic Partnership Agreement covers the following SACUM member countries:
- Botswana - Eswatini - Lesotho - Namibia - South Africa - Mozambique
Before you can benefit from UK preferences, SARS and the relevant customs authorities must be satisfied that your goods qualify under the applicable rules of origin. This requires accurate product classification, clear supply chain documentation and properly completed origin documentation.
Important Information for UK Traders
- All supporting documents must be submitted as clear, legible copies. Incomplete or inconsistent information can lead to delays, queries or denial of preferential treatment at the border.
UK Origin Documentation: Depending on your role and the specific UK trade provisions in use, you may need origin declarations, movement certificates or other supporting documents to prove that your goods qualify for preferential treatment.
- Business Registration Requirements: Your business must be correctly registered with SARS and any relevant trade or customs authorities, with up-to-date details that match your UK documentation.
- Trader and Supply Chain Information: You will need to provide details of your suppliers, manufacturing processes and distribution routes so that origin and value-add can be assessed under the UK trade arrangements.
- Important Notes: All documents must be submitted according to the timelines and formats required by SARS and partner customs authorities. Any changes in your supply chain, product composition or ownership structure should be communicated so that your UK trade status remains accurate.
